RECYCLED MATERIALS CITYSCAPE
For one quarter seventh graders explored recycled materials-based art and examined key examples from artists around the world. We watched the film Manufactured Landscapes (2006) to better understand how we generate waste and what happens to that waste when it travels to China. Students were able to see how waste forms landscapes that are visually striking and sublime. The students who were traveling to China for a school trip were especially interested, as they were able to connect the current pollution and smog problems in Beijing with the major increase in manufacturing seen in the film.
For this project students learned how to draw in one-point perspective and were challenged to use recycled materials of the hardware store and science lab variety to create a cityscape. They started by sketching buildings and skylines of different cities to develop a better idea of the architectural details. Then, working in pairs, the students pushed their creative boundaries to use the materials in unique, inventive ways to create spectacular cityscapes.
