BIOMIMICRY STOP MOTION ANIMATED VIDEOS
For this STEAM project, art and science classes converged. Eighth graders used the Stop Motion Studio app on the iPad to create a short video on biomimicry. Working in teams, students researched biomimicry, which is the imitation of models, systems and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems.
Once they selected a topic and understood the science behind it, the eighth graders devised creative solutions to show the transformation from nature to scientific invention via stop motion animation. They used clay and cut paper to create props and backgrounds. Some examples: an armadillo to armor; bee wings to helicopters; raccoon eyes to bike reflectors; shark skin to swimming racing suits; Kingfisher bird to Japanese bullet train.
