DRAWING
MIXED MEDIA STILL LIFE
This project was designed to strengthen observational drawing skills and encourage personal expression by exploring a variety of materials and techniques. As a warm-up, students began by drawing six extreme close-ups of a stool and applying two or more art elements or principles to each. I demonstrated different techniques and methods of using the materials.
The students chose from objects of varying shapes to set up a shared still life on each table to draw. This drawing was then divided up into four or more sections. Each section was done in a different material (oil pastel, watercolor crayons, charcoal, pencil, colored pencil, ink, collage, etc.). Then, as a class, we critiqued the art and reflected on the process.
