DIGITAL ARTIST COLLAGE
Students applied their knowledge of a specific artist or art movement (from a previous project that encompassed painting and art history) to create a 7x7-inch digital collage in CS6 Photoshop composed of three different images of artwork. Students first engaged in a tutorial on how to use the pen tool to make selections of an image. The next tutorial was how to use different artistic filters to alter an image in creative, fun and interesting ways. We discussed shape, color, emphasis, texture, repetition, layering and rhythm--essential design principles. Through this project, students were presented with the opportunity to examine artwork up-close to discover details in paintings by artists like Henri Matisse and Paul Klee.
The design process consisted of: selecting, copying, pasting, layering, altering, arranging. One learning goal of this project was to learn about the most important application tool, the pen, which is a key to using Photoshop and Illustrator. Another learning goal was to embrace and enjoy Photoshop by having genuine fun with it as students unleashed their creativity. These are complex programs, so it was important to scaffold learning so as to avoid students becoming frustrated and giving up or being turned off from Creative Suite altogether. Once finished, the compositions were printed actual size on photo paper and mounted on black paper.
