DESIGN THINKING WORKSHOP: CUPS
DESIGN THINKING WORKSHOP: CUPS
In this workshop, seventh graders examined examples of recycled material-based art such as that of Vik Muniz (featured in the film Wasteland), Jason Mecier and Yong Ho Ji. They were then given an exercise in design thinking, which required brainstorming, sketching and building/prototyping. Each student received two paper cups and had access to tape, glue, scissors, Sharpie markers and paper. They were given the goal of altering the material to transform it into a work of art. Students were given these prompts to help spur creativity:
-Cut -Mangle -Crumple -Draw -Punch -Shred -Glue -Build -Flatten Through this project the seventh graders engaged in a form of creative problem-solving and demonstrated that when given specific constraints or limitations and materials, creativity can really blossom. Once everyone finished we had a group critique of the artwork where we analyzed idea development and process. |
