ZOMERSCHOOL IN AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
Zomerschool was a summer school program for 10 to 12-year-old Turkish, Moroccan and Surinamese Dutch students that focused on reading, language and math. The art class component was interdisciplinary and tied to the history of Amsterdam and real-life relevancy. In this study abroad, Pratt students collaborated with students from the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming.
UNIT PLAN: Forgotten Foods (2-week unit plan; 30 hours total class time)
Students took a trip to an organic farm where they learned about seldom-used and underrated—yet healthy—vegetables. Then, in the art studio, they had 3 art lessons based on their learning. Many of the same vegetables were used so as to not be wasteful with food. This was co-taught with a Dutch partner of the Academie, which helped immensely with classroom management and language translation.
